Harry Potter Party
I was inspired by unmacaronrose's Harry Potter Party at Diamonds for Dessert . She is a really talented girl and always comes up with the cutest ideas. I especially liked her sorting hat bread, gillyweed salad, snitch balls and pumpkin pasties, so I tried my best to come up with my own version of her ideas. If you like them, all the credit goes to her!
I also tried making food they talked about on the books, especially the sweets from Honeydukes. I wasn't able to make the chocolate frogs because I couldn't find a mold on time
It was a pity because I find they are very representative of the sweets they eat at Hogwarts, and they are also really cute so as soon as I find a good mold, I'll make them! The following pictures show everything I made.
I'll describe every dish I made under each picture. I haven't included all the recipes to not make this post excessively long, but if you want detailed information on how to do them or want me to post the full recipes, don't hesitate to ask for it on the comment section. So here we go, here's everything we ate at my Harry Potter Party:
This is a picture of the whole table with all the dishes. I'm sorry the blanket is showing in the background; I tried removing it but my photoshopping skills are lame. At least it's better than you guys seeing my TV on the background.
So now to the individual dishes. These are Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans. They are frozen spheres made with different fruit pulps. The flavors of the beans are: banana with chocolate chips, lime juice with papaya dice, strawberries with cream, blueberries (I was expecting them to be blue, but they turned out kind of reddish when blended), kiwi with passion fruit and mango with vanilla.
I bought some candy to make some easy dishes and reduce the cooking time, and I'm glad I did because I spent SO much time in the kitchen this weekend. One of the dishes that was just store-bought candy were the Liquorice Wands.
I used gum drops as Fizzing Whizzbees
Gummy worms were used as Jelly Slugs
and lollipops as acid pops. The lollipops weren't sour, so I added sherbet powder on the side to dip the lollipops in.
As for drinks, I made Pumpkin Fizz which was made with vodka, tonic and diced pumpkin. I put pumpkin spice mix on the rim of the glass to give it some kick. Sincerely, I didn't expect it to taste good but it wasn't too bad after all (and I really don't like tonic); the spiced rim gave it a nice touch.
Another drink I made was Bat's Blood Soup which was made of blended strawberries, blackberries, redcurrant, cherries and raspberries. I froze the fruit mix and let it thaw on the glass so it was kind of like a sorbet.
Of course, it wouldn't be a Harry Potter without Butterbeer . It was made of chocolate liqueur with vanilla ice-cream topped with homemade butterscotch sauce and was really delicious.
I made Snitch Balls with goat cheese balls which I rolled in candied almonds. The wings were made out of corn tortillas that were cut into the shape of wings and fried.
Chocolate Cauldrons were little chocolate shells filled with vodka.
Cockroach Clusters were almonds, coconut and pistachios coated with chocolate.
I mixed shredded coconut, sugar and eggs and made chocolate balls to make exploding bonbons.
So, ¿what made these bonbons explosive? I stuffed them with chocolate pop rocks
There were two wand-dishes: a sweet and a savory one. The sweet one was chocolate wands, which were made with chocolate Viennese cookie dough.
The savory one was bread wands, made of (gasp!) bread. Each wand had a different topping and if I remember correctly, the toppings were: thyme, rosemary, pepper, salt, sesame seeds, mustard seeds and dried onion. Again, sorry for the background.
I made pink lamingtons to represent the book's Pink Coconut Ice. These were my personal favorite, but I'm not being objective because I love pink!
Sugared Butterfly Wings were made with rose petals. I dipped the petals in a beaten egg white, gently removed the excess and dipped them in sugar. They looked really pretty and I read they were edible, but I didn't have the courage to try them.
I made little Cauldron Cakes with a regular cupcake recipe on semi-spherical molds. I dipped the round part of the cake to make it look like a cauldron with a foamy filling.
Crystallized Pineapple was just fresh cubed pineapple sautéed with butter on a pan and then sprinkled with sugar.
With all these sugary dishes, a bit of salad was welcome. I used wakame algae, cucumber and sesame seeds with a rice vinegar and soy sauce dressing to make a Gillyweed Salad.
As for savory dishes, I made pumpkin pasties, which were filled with ground meat, raisins, diced pumpkin, caramelized onion seasoned with paprika and cumin.
Another savory dish, and the pièce de résistance was theThe Sorting Hat Pot Pie. The sorting hat was used as the dough topping for a chicken pot pie. I used my old pie crust recipe and shaped it with the help of aluminum foil.
